I received a mailshot recently which carried an advert for an air conditioning company called ‘Munters’. Now I must confess that this had me somewhat amused since, as many of us younger folks know, the word has become something of a popular insult. I thought it was time to look up the accepted meaning of the word since I’ve never really taken the time to investigate.
Two definitions from the urban dictionary are:
1. ‘A girl unblessed by the beauty fairy’- usage.”O my god! did you see the right munter kevin picked up last night”.
2. Someone who is completely wasted on one or all of the following drugs; Ecstasy Speed/Amphetamines Magic Mushrooms, LSD, Poppers Ketamine or Cocaine, usually in combination with copious quantities of alcohol. Commonly displays symptoms of sweating, dishevelledness, gnawing of the inside of the cheeks, gurning (often without realising it), inability to focus, barely capable/ incapable of stringing a coherent sentence together.
Calling someone a munter can be used as an insult, or perversely as a druggy term of endearment amongst fellow wasters.
Why you would want to build a brand around such a word is a mystery to me unless you were going for some kind of specialised escort agency - I dare say it didn’t start out that way and is a family name… but probably worth a rebrand at some point? It’s got me wondering if there have been any other similar cases which forced are think of a company name?
