Saturday night took us down to Cardiff’s harbour area for drinks in a few seafront bars and a meal at the Bosphorus Turkish Restaurant on the Mermaid Quay. I was very impressed with the harbour area in Cardiff on the walk down. It looks quite continental for somewhere in the UK and in some ways it reminded me of Barcelona with its modern architecture. In the background you have a typically picturesque British harbour which reminded me more of Scarborough.
The Wales Millennium Center certainly stands out with its carved inscription which says ‘In these stones horizons sing’ and in Welsh ‘Crev Gwir Fel Gwydr O Ffwrnais Awen’ (which translates as ‘creating truth in glass from the furnace of inspiration’). The National Assembly building looks like a giant wood and glass IKEA construction – but it works. Then there’s a 70ft high stainless steel water feature outside the Millennium Center, rising up into the sky, water runs down it on all sides like a fountain. It was quite confusing for one small girl who ran straight at it like it was a waterfall, needless to say it ended in much crying when her face bounced straight off it.
