Sunday mornings are sacred - they’re meant for sleeping until 11am… until awaking to watch Holly Oaks, Country File and the Eastenders omnibus, before arising for proper food at about 4pm. It’s for this reason that I rarely venture out of bed to go to a car boot sale, and even rarer that I get up early enough to sell my own wares (I get VERY grumpy at 5am). However, this morning Suzie_Q and I decided we wouldn’t ignore the glorious sunlight, so we headed down to Dorking Station for the weekly car boot sale (10am - far too early for me).
On most of the occasions that I’ve ventured down to Dorking’s car boot sale, I have found nothing of particular value: lots of baby clothes, old crockery, medals, dirty Haynes manuals, computers that look like they’re pre-Pentium… and masses of cuddly toys. Today I was pleased to see that somebody had a least found a use for the cuddly toys - the poor teddy bear in the photo above certainly hadn’t gone to a good home; I imagine ‘Rover’ had him ripped to pieces by this evening. One of the stalls that you can find each week sells rusty, blunt and broken gardening / DIY tools. I have never seen anybody buy one, and cannot imagine they ever would, however, after four years of regular stall pitching, there seems to be something going down to keep their interest.
One of the biggest downsides to Dorking car boot is the presence of ‘Market Traders’. These traders sell brand new items on the cheap: light blubs, bin liners, car cleaning materials, plants, watches, remote controlled cars and pegs. For me this spoils what a car boot sale is all about, if I wanted to attend a market I would do so - I’d like to see these vehicles banned in favour of proper car boot sellers (we were turned away one morning when we tried to pitch there).
For the first time in five years I actually bought something more than a bacon sandwich (available from the grump in ‘The Green Machine’). I found an Amstrad 901 CB radio for just £4 - a classic piece of CB history - complete with original microphone! In addition I went a bit crazy and added three items to my vast and geeky collection of Star Wars memorabilia.
