‘The Big Chill House’ is the name of the newly refurbished bar / restaurant on Pentonville Road beside King’s Cross Thameslink station. Previously this bar had been themed around a Bedouin / Arabic tent and named ‘Sahara Nights’, but all traces of that establishment are gone, and presumably the Belly Dancing nights with it! The new decor of this bar is much more modern and minimalist. This visit on Wednesday evening was more of a reconnaissance mission for my fellow drinkers and I to see if we want to go back again. I think probably we do, as it seems much more professional and clean; I’d trust them to cook me a meal now.
They’ve kept the ’comfy seating’ area upstairs in the Big Chill House and replaced the dirty old drink-stained furnishings that used to be located there. I’m glad because it’s nice to get away from the general noise of the bar for a more private chat with friends. The balcony roof area is also still available for use (weather permitting) it’s been fitted with wooden decking - providing wooden alcoves for groups of six to eight people. I thought it a little like sitting in a swedish sauna without the hot air.
FOOD UPDATE - September 14th
Returned to the Big Chill House today for lunch; chose a steak sandwich and chips for a direct comparison with the Driver on Caledonian Road. The chips weren’t quite as wedge-like (and are only available as a side-order) however they were cooked to perfection and the mustard accompanied steak sandwhich was very tasty). My fellow diner had a pizza, which he wasn’t quite as impressed with, but it was clearly made by hand with a continental thin base (not a frozen supermarket special). We had a very friendly waitress who even offered to make me a mint tea using real mint leaves, a refreshing service experience. King’s Cross now has a new reliable extra lunch time option!
