Solving problems in your sleep

by @ 8:41 pm. Blogged under Living and Dying, Thinking

Bad FoodApologies to my regular readers, I’ve had no time for blogging this past week, having worked a mammoth 6-day 77-hour week which took its toll on my eating plans - a KFC Meal, Domino’s Pizza, Chinese takeaway and an M&S Hoisin Duck wrap providing the main ‘norishment’ for late night dinner from Monday to Thursday. I didn’t even get time to have a drink at the pub after work on Friday (and that’s unheard of for me!). Getting home at later than 10pm each night doesn’t leave much time for preparing anything healthy to eat, especially if you want to get a decent eight-hour sleep. On Wednesday night I was so caught up in my work that when my head hit the pillow I dreamed I was checking my in-box all night long - when I woke up I felt exhausted.  This reminded me of a conversation that was had at lunch with colleagues some weeks back.

Dreaming of workIt’s not uncommon to dream about work whilst asleep, but sometimes during times of stress ’working procedures’ seem to take hold of the mind in great detail. Last week I read about 10 emails and replied to them in my sleep (I don’t know if they were based on reality as I can’t remember that much detail). A colleague of mine who undertakes database programming does on occasion dream a solution whilst ’programming’ in her sleep - writing it down when she wakes up. My sister informs me that when she worked in retail she’d dream of serving customers at a till and wake up exausted. In my retail days I would dream about the order of the shoes in the stock room - quite helpful for reinforcing a memory of what’s in stock when actually on the shop floor. It makes me wonder if there are any other examples of people solving problems in their sleep? Not sure it’s a good thing though - must to be a sign of stress.

Oh yes I’m very stressed :-)
As Garfield said: ‘last night I dreamt I was eating gob stoppers and when I woke up my marble collection had gone.’

I was stuck for an ending to my book ‘Scarab Eyes’ and that night I had a dream and it was the perfect ending for it.
However, I have most ideas for my stories when I am just getting off to sleep as that is when the mind is at it’s most relaxed and when you get the best ideas.
