Thursday evening saw an office outing to ’Funland’ at the Trocadero in Piccadilly - eight lanes hired for a multiple team and individual play-off. We were due to start bowling at about 8pm, but the lanes weren’t actually available until 8:45pm, so the management placated us with some free tokens for the dodgems in the basement. Didn’t engage in that activity myself so watched instead, used to love the dodgems when I was a kid but like so many similar theme-park style rides, being 6ft 5″ usually leads to whip-lash or bruised legs. Somebody needs to build comfortable rides for tall people.

Once on the Funland bowling lanes (with supersize Velcro shoes the like of which I’ve only ever seen for children before), the bar staff were pretty attentive with delivering drinks (as were my team mates) so this ensured we were all quite well inebriated as the night progressed. Managed a ‘four strikes in a row’ run of form in the first game which saw me make the top four scorers of the evening for the final individual play-off. Mr Director also made the top four, and it wouldn’t have been in anybody’s career interests to beat him, so he won the final game… or maybe it was just the drink affecting us ;-)

Compared to ten pin bowling in Horsham, Funland was much better in that the overhead computers worked, the toilets were cleaner, and the air conditioning didn’t make me so hot that I kept dropping the ball due to ’sweaty hands’ (always my excuse). The staff were also very helpful with the individual score print-outs. Other than the disappointing late start to our evening, Funland at the Trocadero is recommended. My only criticism would be that the seating area in each lane is a bit cramped versus somewhere like the Hollywood bowl chain, but you’re not there to sit down.
