I’m getting married in January and at the moment there’s quite a lot to be sorted out. On Sunday Suzie_Q and I took a trip to the wedding fair at Denbies Vineyard in Dorking. We weren’t sure how much we’d learn, since we attended the previous fair back in March. We didn’t pick up anything new - most of the exhibitors were the same, various purveyors of wedding rings and wedding cakes, a magician, harp player, and florist. Denbies hire out their venue for civil ceremonies and wedding receptions so have a stand to promote that service. Suzie_Q and I did consider choosing them for the reception, but upon lunching there last week with Dorking’s entire population of grey haired residents, I realised the conservatory restaurant reminded me too much of Littlewoods café in Stevenage, despite the lovely building design.
As exhibitions go this one is increasingly very hard sell, all we really wanted to do was wander around for ideas, look at what was on offer and chat to people if necessary. Instead we got every single exhibitor leap on us and start talking about what they could do. By the third cake maker I was worn out – a cake is a cake, don’t tell me I can park outside your shop in Guildford, it’s not a winning USP. After ten minutes I said to Suzie_Q – “Let’s go this is too much so we escaped. It was very hard sell – not least from the bizarre couple offering videography services – with hideously designed DVD cases and wonky demo footage. I was particularly amused by their sales pitch – which involved talking at the same time over each other. Not the weirdest exhibit there though – that award went to the lady singing loudly in an operatic tone; truly horrendous.
