With internal flights cancelled at Heathrow and Gatwick today due to thick fog, I wasn’t sure how clear I’d find the M25. Sure enough there was an accident at junction 18 and the variable speed limits were in force to slow everybody down right back at junction 11. I only got stuck in queued traffic twice, but it still took forty-five minutes to travel from junctions 9 to 13. The reason for my trip? Visiting my accountant to drop off the 2005/06 accounts, a return due to Companies House in January… and more importantly - corporation tax due on January 1st (how depressing).
Heathrow airport seemed to be more shrouded in fog that I’ve ever seen it before. As I drove around the outer perimeter of terminal four I wound down my window, I could hear planes taking off, but see none of them - not even a flash of their lights as they passed over the road. It was quite disconcerting and I for one would hate to be a pilot blindly jetting down a foggy runway with 300 passengers on board.
Having delivered my box files to the accountant I headed for the petrol station to grab some lunch on the move. Whilst a petrol station lunch is never the healthiest option, I do actually quite enjoy my typical selection - chicken wraps, a ginster’s pastie, smiths crisps and a bottle of water. The menu was particularly enhanced by the radio - today’s choice - Kiss FM (with some classics from my younger days). I think subconsciously I must set out to cover the passenger seat in my favourite goodies, because every journey seems to end with a crumb and packet covered car seat!
As I passed Epsom and Leatherhead on the way back home, some two hours after starting out, the fog had started to settle there too, by tonight I suspect it will be a very nasty cold environment outside beyond my lovely central heated home.
