We arrived in Edinburgh airport early on Monday afternoon, after a very bumpy approach as high winds buffeted our little British Airways plane; we could see the choppy Firth of Forth below us through the cabin window as we clutched our seat arms tightly. Thoughts of movie classic Flash Gordon went through my head as I hoped Ming the Merciless wasn’t about to fly into the cockpit and rip our pilots from their seats.

Edinburgh airport was very small, no need to show passports on arrival – just straight off the plane into arrivals where baggage reclaim was (rather worryingly) shared for all and sundry. Rather than hire a car using the BA online booking process (which clearly carries an extra cut for BA) I did a few web searches and found 1Car1 to have a good website, reasonable rates and acceptable terms.

From the airport arrivals lounge we hopped on the ‘secure car parks’ bus for the short journey to 1Car1 that was in fact, a small cabin in a car park marked ‘Reception’. Reassuringly the very warm cabin (it was freezing outside) contained very friendly and helpful staff who even offered us one of their luxury chocolate biscuits. Having remembered all of my license paperwork we had no problems obtaining the keys to our Vauxhall Vectra before heading off to Melville Castle Hotel - 1Car1 staff directions fresh in our minds (the bits we could understand anyway!).
