On Sunday evening, whilst collapsed in the sofa following the exhaustion of steam-cleaning the carpets AND relocating household furniture (again), I came across something to take me way back to my childhood. There on ITV3 was Michael Praed as Robin of Sherwood - complete with that absolute classic sound track by Clannad ‘Rooooobin…. the hooded man‘. It wasn’t that long ago I watched an episode of the BBC’s latest attempt at a Robin Hood series and switched it over moaning about it not being as good as it was in my day. To my absolute joy I was able to put that theory to the test and see that I was indeed quite correct, Robin of Sherwood was better by a million miles (if now a little worn around the edges and featuring some very ’80s’ scene transitions).
When the credits came up at the end of the programme showing it as being made in 1983 I felt very old indeed. I remember quite clearly the frustration of being taken to the garage with my Dad on a Saturday to get some new tyres for the car, forced to sit in the waiting room with the TV on the wrong channel whilst I missed an entire episode of Robin. That traumatic experience I never forgot… but what I had forgotten was that the original Robin of Sherwood was played by Michael Praed - looking like he could have gone off set and played bass for Duran Duran, Series 3 & 4 saw him replaced by Jason Connery - Sean’s son.
The best thing about Robin of Sherwood was not the strange mystical antler headed man, or the presence of Ray Winstone as Will Scarlett, but the fact that it was actually quite violent. No tongue in cheek falling off battlements into bails of hay - if you fought with a sword you died by the sword, although the masses of soldiers finished off by the merry men did always disappear. If you get a moment to catch Robin of Sherwood whilst it’s being shown in ITV3 I seriously recommend it for a dose of Nostalgia.

Richard Greene will always be the best Robin Hood, in my opinion. In the days of black and white tv he appeared in
141 episodes 1955-1960.
I can still remember the theme tune.
‘Robin Hood, Robin Hood riding through the glen, Robin Hood, Robin Hood with his band of men.
Feared by the bad , loved by the good , Robin Hood Robin Hood, Robin Hood’.
My brother made me ‘wicked’ bow and arrow sets using wood from the trees in the forest near our house so we could have our own Robin Hood adventures, Happy magical days.

or the perfectly tonsured Friar Tuck who spent all his time hitting the sherrif’s men over the head with chicken bones and flagons of wine, and then looking to heaven and saying a quick prayer before he took another one out…
