It must be hard to be the Marketer for eggs – they’re not unusual, everybody buys them, almost everything we bake contains them… and then there’s Avian Flu and Salmonella to contend with. When I read today that the Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre (BACC) has banned a re-run of some old 1950s egg TV commercials on the grounds that ‘the concept of eating eggs every day goes against the principle of eating a varied diet’ I was a little surprised. However, upon watching the old Tony Hancock adverts I was even more surprised at how good they were, and as a new owner of Chickens this week… quite encouraged to eat more.
Yes - you read that correctly… at the weekend I invested in a Dorking Cock (a real one) and a Dorking Hen, kindly maintained by my brother in law with his existing brood. Suzie_Q and I have been accepting free range eggs from him free for many years so I thought it was time to invest in our own livestock. Before I met Suzie_Q I’d never had a real egg – yellow inside and not the washed out yellow of supermarket ‘free range’ eggs, they taste better and make ‘eggcellent’ sponge cakes. What with my tomato, beetroot and lettuce growing I’m becoming quite organic.
The Tony Hancock adverts produced by the British Egg Marketing Board are in my opinion quite forward thinking. When one thinks of 1950s advertising we tend to picture that brand of ‘Mr Chomondley-Warner’ informational narrative made famous by Harry Enfield. These are nothing of the sort, they’re quite humorous - probably quite a gamble in their day, and do the traditional job of hitting you with marketing slogans again and again and again. There are many modern day TV adverts which could learn a thing or two from these, if the BACC has banned the originals I suggest the Egg Marketing Board remake them using modern day actors – could work out ‘eggspensive’ though I suppose

What’s wrong with going to work on an egg. We don’t only eat breakfast, so there’s plenty of time to get in all the other bits and pieces at lunch and dinner ( or dinner and tea if you’re from the Midlands)And there’s nothing to stop you having juice or fruit too, or cereal as well. There was that other fabulous egg advert too - “How do you like your eggs Mr… (Smith/Jones? can’t remember that bit)Fried or Boiled? and Mr Whatever His Name Is thinks of all the other ways he might have his eggs - poached, scrambled, souffled, “en cocotte” So there we are. I ask again What’s wrong with going to work on an egg?
