Today is the first birthday of the new look Firetop website complete with blog entries, one year ago I was at Wimbledon spotting celebrities like ‘Nana Moon’ and Rob Brydon, this year it’s far too wet to enjoy the queuing. Furthermore Suzie_Q seems to be displaying early labour symptoms this morning, which could make June 28th a birthday of a different kind next year! So what exactly has the blog achieved in the past year? Surprisingly a few unexpected interactions from those at the centre of a article topics - a celebrity chef, Virgin’s commercial director, the Marketing Manager of Internet World, a developer at Eyewonder, not to mention many unknown people who have solved their Microsoft credit card bill mystery.

On the whole the site is now ticking along at around 10,000 unique visitors a month - generating 16,000 visits and 30,000 page views. I have to thank Google for the 7,500 referrals it sent to Firetop in May, and to a lesser extent Yahoo! and MSN for their shared 800 (putting Google’s search market dominance on display). Some odd search terms do crop up now and again, but as usual it’s anything remotely sexual which I’ve blogged (channel four’s celebrity sex tapes show) which storms into the top 10 searches:

2. “microsoft online svcs”
3. “celebrity sex tapes”
4. “giant cocks”
5. “cartoon theme tunes”
6. “roller disco”
7. “dorking cock”
8. “sex tapes”
9. “cream amnesia”
10. “matt peskett”

More unusual searches include:

> “you cant whip our cocks t-shirts” - why would we want to?
> “when were dogs and cats found out” - what that secretly they are the best of friends?
> “what causes people to stop breathing?” - ummmm now let me think, oh yes that’s it - death.
> “graphs of use of electricity in the uk since 1900″ - surely you can guess what it looks like anyway?
> “glamour models from dagenham” - a contradiction in terms surely?
> “very giant cocks” - as opposed to just ‘giant cocks’ which would of course be small by comparison…
> “set up a live webcam secretly in my room” - should we call the police?
> “fat people playing football” - just cruel

I have been planning a bit of a redesign of the site for 2007 but am working on a few other web projects at the moment so it will have to stay as it is for now. I’d like to find a way to block the 26,000 attempted spam comments made over the past twelve months from even reaching the Akismet filter - it all seems to come from Russia with Love - but not the kind of love you or I want to hear about…
