Time Magazine: Beware the Ice Age

by @ 5:47 pm. Blogged under Science & Technology, Thinking

Ice AgeWith all the severe flooding we’ve been having of late in the UK, and tabloid headlines unsurprisingly attributing it all to ‘global warming’, I started looking at the alternating patterns of the Polar Jet Stream in years gone by to see if we really should be worried. The answer? Yes you guessed it… Man is always worried – in June 1974 it reportedly snowed in London because of an unusually low Polar Jet Stream, all around the world weather was very unsettled; drought, severe flooding and tornadoes. What tickled me most was finding an article from Time Magazine’s 1974 archive entitled ‘Another Ice Age’.

Upon reading the old Time magazine article one cannot help but laugh out loud – it’s pretty clear our scientists and weatherfolk have never had a clue about global weather and climate at all. All the same arguments and indicators which were then blamed on a forthcoming ice age are now being put forward as global warming signs. I’m actually wondering what happened to the data responsible for this statement ‘When meteorologists take an average of temperatures around the globe they find that the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades’ Cooler? Surely not… sure enough ‘Since the 1940s the mean global temperature has dropped about 2.7° F’ – don’t hear that mentioned much now do you?

You really must read this Time Magazine archive article, it’ll make you realise that it’s not worth listening to a word you hear on the television about global warming ever again, I dare say in thirty years it will all have swung the other way again.

  1. John Cook Says:

The thing is climatologists understand very clearly why there was cooling from the 1940’s to the 1970’s - it was due to sulfur aerosols in the atmosphere from pollution. Aerosols reflect sunlight, stopping them from getting through the atmosphere and warming the earth - it’s called global dimming. When clean air laws reduced sulfur pollution, the cooling effect reversed itself in the mid-80’s. One way of looking at it is the mid-century cooling is an example of how human activity impacts the global climate but also how we can fix it.

What unmitigated rubbish. Do you really believe that if ALL of cans of hair spray & bug killer were unleashed it could create “global dimming”?

I suspect the only dimming is intellects of those who believe the hubris that mankind COULD effect global..anything.

The atmosphere is VERY large..5 Quadrillion tons..that’s 5 followed by 18 0’s. 700 million times the 26 billion tons of man’s CO2 contribution.
