On Saturday evening Suzie_Q and I had the in-law babysitters in place and, with Maria now sleeping through the night, we felt safe to venture a bit further afield. I went online and found an Italian restaurant in central Guildford called Da Gennaro. Upon discovering their website to be up-to-date I gambled on a table reservation - if a website is being updated then some reasonably professional enterprise must be behind it (in my opinion). Gnocchi was also on the menu - this was the main thing to draw us in, you can’t find that anywhere in Dorking except Sainsbury’s!
Once parked up we had a bit of trouble finding ‘Da Gennaro’ because it looked easier to find on the map I had memorised, and then we almost forgotten the name of the establishment. We eventually found the restaurant opposite Guildford bus station and only a stone’s throw from the old location of Bojangles nightclub where Suzie_Q and I spent many a happy night dancing in our early dating days (99/00). Thankfully Da Gennaro was rammed full of diners (capacity forty I reckon) - always a good sign and I was pleased we’d made a good call on a random Italian restaurant selection.
We both had Gnocchi to start (contrary to the waitress’s initial question of ‘What would you like for pudding?’). Despite Suzie_Q finding a small piece of metal in her dish (from an opened tin I suspect) it was still lovely and not too squishy. I did mention the metal to the waiter if only to ensure that some other poor diner didn’t end up with a larger quantity of razor-sharp metal in their throat. For my main I had the Pollo Valdostana - Chicken Breast cooked in a Tomato and Cream Sauce with Ham and Mozzarella. I finished with a dessert called ‘Bombed by Chocolate’ - not sure that’s quite the right translation for a ‘bombe’; I wasn’t sure if ordering it meant I was attacked my chocolate laden waiting staff.
On the whole it was pretty decent Italian food in a nice small restaurant, served by friendly staff. Probably not the best tomato sauce I’ve ever had on either dish - reminded me very much of Heinz tomato soup, but that won’t stop me going back from more on a regular basis. The cost was quite a bonus too, only fractionally more expensive than the tasteless offerings of Dorking’s Watermill pub.
