It’s been quite hard to get away from the US election in the British media, hardly surprising in my opinion as this is about electing arguably the most powerful person in the world. With Super Tuesday occurring tomorrow (and you thought it was just Pancake Day) the main candidates for the Democrats and Republicans will be decided. Poor Suzie_Q has been forced to watch ‘The / A Daily Show‘ with John Stewart on More4 for the past two weeks - worth a watch even if we do get it with a 24 hour delay. Tonight after watching the global edition I thought I’d see which of the two Democrat candidates (Clinton and Obama) were leading the Google search race in the US - and it’s Barack Obama.
With more people searching “Obama” than “Clinton” across America, by some sizeable margin, I’m putting my faith in the Google Trends data to place a little bet. William Hill are offering Barack Obama at 5/4 with Hillary Clinton the more popular 4/7 - both sets of odds quite poor admittedly but I’m going with the popular vote on this (if a Google search can be seen to be representative of a vote). Let’s see if Google really can predict the results of an election:
Google Trends:
‘Obama’ versus ‘Clinton’ and ‘McCain’
‘Barack Obama’ versus ‘Hillary Clinton’ and ‘John McCain’
Also worth noting is that Obama wins the Google PageRank battle too - his site a 7/10 versus Hillary’s 6/10. Another indicator of more influential and probably larger quantities of inbound links.
